Laryngeal Manipulation
What is Laryngeal Manipulation?
Laryngeal Manipulation is a hands-on treatment designed for all professional voice users (singers, actors, voice-overs, teachers, etc.) and it is sometimes referred to as Voice Massage or Circum-laryngeal Massage.
Over-use or misuse of the voice making system can commonly be a problem for these categories causing: partial or total voice loss, loss of vocal range, Muscle Tension Dysphonia, decreased vocal stamina and vocal fatigue, increased recovery time after performing, globus pharingeus (difficulties swallowing), pain and soreness.
This type of treatment consists in the application of specific Soft Tissue Therapy techniques (i.e. Myofascial release. Trigger point therapy, etc.) while the patient is either sitting down or laying supine.

All the techniques are quite slow, deep and controlled. They are often combined with simple active or passive movements of the patient in order to break down the restrictions that are preventing the tissues from stretching and sliding as they should.
This non-invasive approach is designed to assess and treat those tissues directly involved in voice production and will focus on:
- Jaw
- Floor of the mouth
- Palate
- Tongue
- Supra-hyoid muscles
- Thiro-hyoid space
- Crico-thiroid joint
- Inferior strap muscles
- Pharyngeal constrictors
- Diaphragm

Combined Myofascial Release
Because of the many anatomical connections of these elements with the rest of the body a complete myofascial approach should never forget to target also areas not directly involved in voice production but equally able to affect and compromise its normal function.
This is why I always combine Laryngeal Manipulation techniques with Advanced Myofascial Release around:
- Head and cervical spine
- Shoulders
- Rib cage and thoracic spine
- Abdominal wall and lumbar spine
- Pelvic floor
The combination of Laryngeal Manipulation and Myofascial release is a highly effective treatment that will alleviate the symptoms of the pathological voice and restore freedom of movement of the larynx and its optimal resting state in the neck.
Laryngeal manipulation can help:
- Achieve a deeper larynx set
- Increase resonance
- Increase vocal range
- Reduce tongue root tension
- Reduce recovery time between performances
- Improve breathe support and management
Unique whole-body approach
01
When needed an even more comprehensive ‘whole-body-approach’ can be adopted in order to improve your postural alignment and achieve both a better sense of grounding and sense of lift.
02
These results will help the voice user improve their body weight management, better their positioning awareness and therefore support the work done with the Feldenkrais method and Alexander technique.
03
This unique approach will also help you discover a better relationship between your pelvic floor, respiratory diaphragm and larynx for a higher degree efficiency in all types of singing (see Structural Bodywork).
